When you come to France to learn French, it’s not just the language that changes. You will also have to adapt to new habits, a different pace of life, and a new environment. Comfort in France could be different from what you know in your country. The means of transport, the distances to be covered are all different and daily life can sometimes surprise you.
Depending on your starting level, you may have a lot to learn. Don’t be discouraged, French as a foreign language (FLE) teachers are trained to support you and help you progress. They are there to help you achieve your language goals, not to judge you.
The choice of French school in France is crucial, but that of your accommodation is just as important. Feeling good in your daily life in France is as important as the quality of the French courses you take.
France is a country rich in regional diversity: life in Lille is very different from that in Nice, Bordeaux, Paris or a quieter medium-sized city. You will also discover that the French do not all speak exactly the same French. There are regional variations and differences between social backgrounds (for example, the language of young people often differs from that of adults).
Being independent, having your own room is good. But staying isolated all the time is not a good idea. Learning a language also means communicating. The best way to progress, in addition to the French courses you will take in your FLE school, is to meet people, talk and exchange… in French, of course.
This is why you will come to France: to learn French, discover the culture, and have an enriching experience. This is how you will succeed in your French as a foreign language course in France.
If you have the impression that the French course you are taking does not correspond to your level or your objectives… If an educational activity does not meet your expectations… If your accommodation in France poses serious problems. No one is perfect. In all GFLE member schools there is a dedicated person to listen to you. They are there to explain things and to advise you and help you get the most out of your experience so that your language learning stay in France is a success. Do not wait until the last day to express your feelings or to make comments. In the event of a problem, you can contact the school management directly, explaining the reasons for your complaint. At the end of your stay, you will complete an evaluation of satisfaction questionnaire. These assessments are essential for GFLE schools, because they allow them to improve their service to students and to better meet the expectations of their international students. In the event of a serious problem, a formal appeal can be sent to the FLE Quality label authorities. Another appeal can also be sent to the Groupement FLE secretariat (contact@groupement-fle.com).
However, if the course you took meets your expectations, we encourage you to share your positive experience by leaving a review, in French or in your native language, on the medium of your choice.
