French Gastronomy

What are meals like in France?

French gastronomy is renowned throughout the world for its quality and diversity. Of course, you won’t enjoy a gourmet meal every day, but you will quickly discover the culinary richness of traditional French cuisine.

In general, in France, meals follow a rhythm of three main moments per day:

Morning breakfast: The French breakfast is often light. It generally includes a coffee or tea, accompanied by a slice of bread with jam or honey, or a croissant. However, in some families a more substantial breakfast may be offered. If you are staying with a host family, please indicate your breakfast preferences.

Lunch (between 12 p.m. and 1 p.m.): This is often a quick and simple meal, especially for active people. A sandwich, a slice of pizza, or a mixed salad are common choices. Those who have more time sometimes opt for a more complete menu, including for example a salad and a dessert such as a pastry or fruit.

Dinner (around 7-8 p.m.): This is the main meal of the day, where you take the time to savor. The French dinner can be a simple meal tray in front of the television, or a real meal shared with the family, including a starter, a main course, cheese and a dessert. Dinner is also a special time to share and discuss with family members.

It is not uncommon in France to have friends or family over for dinner during the week. Offering a pleasant meal is a tradition anchored in French culture, symbolizing conviviality and hospitality. On weekends or on holidays, the French like to prepare festive meals, which can last several hours and are often an opportunity to taste typical dishes and regional specialties.
Don’t worry, despite these indulgent habits, France has a lower obesity rate than many other countries, partly thanks to the balance of meals and the importance of food quality in French gastronomy.
